چکیده

We derived crater production functions and chronology functions of Phobos for two scenarios, which likely represent the end-members of its dynamical evolution. Case A assumes that Phobos has been in its current orbit about Mars since its formation. Case B assumes a recent capture of Phobos and the impact history of an average Main Belt Asteroid. We determined the age of an average surface to the west of the Stickney crater and of the interior of the Stickney crater. The results indicate (i) the formation or major collision of Phobos about 4.3 Ga (Case A) or 3.5 Ga (Case B) ago, (ii) the Stickney crater is about 4.2 Ga (Case A) or 2.6 Ga (Case B) old and (iii) grooves probably formed between 3.1 and 3.8 Ga (Case A) or 44 and 340 Ma (Case B). Thus, Stickney seems to be older than the investigated grooves on Phobos. & 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Grooves on Phobos: Their Distribution, Morphology and Possible Origin

A remarkable characteristic of the surface of Phobos is that it is densely covered by grooves--long linear depressions formed in a regolith. Typically, grooves are 100-200 m wide, 10-20 m deep, and have smooth concave-up cross profiles. Some can be traced for up to 30 km. Groove paths follow the intersection of planes with the surface of Phobos. Groove planes are grouped in four sets of paralle...

Groove formation on Phobos: Testing the Stickney ejecta emplacement model for a subset of the groove population

Numerous theories have been proposed for the formation of grooves on Phobos, and no single explanation is likely to account fully for the wide variety of observed groove morphologies and orientations. One set of grooves is geographically associated with the impact crater Stickney. We test the hypothesis that these grooves were formed by clasts that were ejected from the Stickney crater interior...

The Phobos geodetic control point network and rotation model

A new global control point network was derived for Phobos, based on SRC (Mars Express), Phobos-2, and Viking Orbiter image data. We derive 3-D Cartesian coordinates for 813 control points as well as improved pointing data for 202 SRC and Viking images in the Phobos-fixed coordinate system. The point accuracies vary from 4.5 m on the Phobos nearside, to up to 67.0 m on the farside, where we rely...

Missing Craters on Eros, Phobos, and the Moon - Crater Erasure in a Thick Regolith?

The NEAR Shoemaker images provided the first reliable observations of sub-100 m craters on an asteroid. Veverka et al. [1] and Chapman et al. [2] found that much of the surface approached "empirical saturation", but at sizes below about 100-200 m the crater density was progressively lower than predicted for nearly saturated surfaces and did not have a slope expected of production populations. W...

Sesquinary catenae on the Martian satellite Phobos from reaccretion of escaping ejecta

The Martian satellite Phobos is criss-crossed by linear grooves and crater chains whose origin is unexplained. Anomalous grooves are relatively young, and crosscut tidally predicted stress fields as Phobos spirals towards Mars. Here we report strong correspondence between these anomalous features and reaccretion patterns of sesquinary ejecta from impacts on Phobos. Escaping ejecta persistently ...
